[Well, he went out and said it. That just kind of threw it all for a loop.
Should she be happy for now that he said it? Maybe Riye could let a few thoughts translate enough in her brain to then feel like she could be more coherent.]
...Oh. Yeah, Peony. We met yesterday, or met all over again. Whichever sounds better. When I tried to go get these to you the first time.
Which was why I wasn't sure if it was okay to stop on over, admittedly.

[The air grew thick, that dread and fear crawled right on out of the gutter. For someone trying very hard to be sensible and sensitive, the topic was just too sensitive. Trying to avoid it in favor of space, she was so sure that was what she wanted. It felt the most right to her. She DID want it, and if she were to just convey that she wanted nothing more than to be that support...then maybe this wouldn't be so bad.
But then her fear felt like it was coming alive, and she hated it. Riye had to get control back.]
I just figured maybe you needed a bit of time, that's all. Catching up and trying to sort things out. The last thing I wanted to do was get in the middle of it.

I assumed that.
[She felt her body tense up and then release. What was she so afraid of then? It was a sudden reflex, and she could still feel her nerves twinge and trust around.
There's a lot you wouldn't understand.
Somehow, when that was suddenly said...it made her feel awful. Like a cold steel wall came in between them. It didn't feel right. She would understand if it were explained as "complicated", but saying outright that she "wouldn't understand" was something that felt so different. She didn't understand right now, but she was hearing herself say that. ABOUT herself at this moment, said the girl who always knew who she was and where she stood.]
Now that it's happening, I kind of expected a lot of confusion before anything else. You and Luna both gave off the impression things weren't ideal before you got here.

[Uh, that was worrying. Completely worrying. If she thought about it, she would realize just how hard stuff like that was to talk about. She DID understand that. But she was repeating herself a lot, to give her a chance.
Being alive versus being NOT, that was a lot of information to let her big imagination run wild.]
This place works in weird and mysterious ways. It's mostly stupid ways but it sounds like there's a blessing in your case.
[Jealous, she felt. They were just talking about what they would kill just to see that One Person again, and now he did. He got to. So now here she was, right out here. Sitting in the cold outside like a puppy that just wanted to have that warm security of indoors. She hadn't felt this way since that one whole summer from back in the good old days of High School Simplicity. When she and Jane weren't speaking and she just about went through all of what she could to do so again. That empty dissociation she felt rumbling in her gut. Things felt impossible.
She wanted to ask so badly, but she couldn't find it in good sense to begin to do so.]
I'll promise I won't, if it means you guys can work things out in your own way.
[That felt so bad coming out.]

[It was a joke. To think that anything just seemed to work out the way things do. She remembered her talk with Raiden, and how she firmly believed in what she did and stuck to it. But...there was a twinge in her heart that made her question a lot. If they could be together, then that was great. That was truly wonderful for them, she was happy in a melancholic way. They could start over, no matter how bad it may be at first there was still that chance. Riye felt like she had to start over far too many times.
...They were friends, weren't they? How much did that mean to him? Did it mean as much to him as it did to her? Did ANYONE here understand that?]
I will, I just got to be stealthy about it. You and Peony know more about it than I do, but I know he's stubborn.
[Despite the mild attempt at humor, there was a frown.]
Need anything else? I could just jet and let you rest.

[ With Mallory back and Eiji in the clear— time to carry on with the daily business! Luckily, Ethan's found a hobby right where he works; who knew farm animals were so relaxing, even while your hands got dirty and your muscles labored. He has to admit, it's much better than the clattering and beeping of construction sights and heavy machinery— horses were great.
If he could, he'd bring Switch (a feisty little filly) back to the rooms with him. This evening, like every evening, he only returns with a napsack of his belongings, laundry needing a good wash and body ready to check out for the day with a shower— he also comes with something fresh! A few fruits from the first April harvests wrapped carefully in homemade containers: strawberries and miniatures papayas.
Coming back to the rooms is no longer dreaded, and what's new is the content smile playing his lips. There're no traps to dodge (and/or die from), there's hardly even that awkward, heavy air that came with avoiding Mallory, or upsetting Luna. Because now there's Peony, and Peony's an angel. In fact— the fruits are brought with the bubbly roommate in mind. He got enough for everyone at least, and if it's ever needed he can always snag more, but . . . Peony tho.
Here he comes, sliding the door open to their room with a honey sweet smile and closing it behind him. ]
Hey— [ A small wave, his attention everywhere else but a resting Mister Mal, searching their quarters for something much more interesting to give proper hellos to. ] Is Miss Peony around?

I might start charging if you did.
[A joke at who's expense then. Now that she was successfully placed somewhere to roost, it was a bit more apparent to her where she stood.
She Didn't Know.
Was it trust? Protection? Rejection? Pushing away? Riye had a difficult time reading the situation for once. This hadn't happened in some time. Him getting antsy and then relaxing, back to being vague.
It's not his fault, it wasn't. It was natural how he was acting. But what about her? She knew she wasn't feeling herself, and the fact that she could offer no protest and a cynical joke instead meant she was distancing herself from the emotional aspect as much as she could. Because it was simply safer.
It wasn't working this time.]
I'll leave you to it then. See you later.
[She needed to get out before she did or said something she could regret.]

Oh . . . Miss Peony?
[ HE COULD BE PLAYING HIM but eh— she's really not around, huh . . . Ethan's shoulders droop as he glances toward the empty bathrooms when his call goes unanswered. Nope. Only neatly tucked futons. So it was just . . . Mal, huh. The sugar on his face seems to fall right off with him shrugging his bag off his shoulder and to the floor near his little belongings corner, holding onto the containers and tapping them in thought.
He wanted her to have the first look at it, so . . . ]
I . . . Think I'll wait.
[ Mallory would probably eat everything and not even say a word to her later. Like it never happened! Or say something like "Hey Ethan gave me these and didn't want you to have any what a dick". Plus, he wasn't planning on going out any more.
So. Your trust! Has yet to be earned. ]

coming in like a wreeeeeeeeeecking baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall
[ AT SOME LATER POINT, possibly after Ko has been chased off or went to look for her somewhere else or I don't know but please don't have killed him, Peony comes back to the shared room.
She walks carefully, keeping her steps as light as possible. Even if there's no real way Mallory would be able to hear her approach when the door's closed, there's some superstitious little part of her that expects him to be... what? Lurking? Ready to jump her at any moment? She'd seen the state of his leg; that man wasn't going to be up for much jumping at all any time soon.
(Or rather, he'd better not be trying. Awkward as things are right now, she's entirely prepared to yell at him as much as she needs in order to make sure she's heard.)
...At the same time, there's still a part of her that sort of hopes the room will be entirely empty when she opens the door and pokes her head inside. It's not like she isn't happy to see them (even now, even after everything), but with how strained things have been, she's always grateful to have some time to herself.
No such luck, but a girl can dream. ]
--Ah. Look at you, being a good boy for once.

[ Her smile widens a little at the response; it's a relief for her, too, to have him respond so normally. Maybe between the two of them, they can continue to pretend that Nothing Is Wrong so hard that the world will reshape itself accordingly.
(That's not likely, she knows, but whatever. For now, she'll take it.) ]
I'll know if you're pushing yourself too hard. You can hide it from anyone else, but not from me.
[ Of course Luna had been the primary focus of her attention -- she'd learned his buttons very well over the years: when to push harder, when to back off, when to let him think that an idea was his. And as a consequence, she'd learned to notice when he was hiding injuries -- sometimes she'd called him out on that, and sometimes she'd simply let that slow him down further.
But just because she'd been mostly focused on Luna didn't mean she hadn't learned a lot about Mal, either, over the years. ]

[ She falters for a second at that. She doesn't know much of anything about what the two of them have been up to in the time between their arrival and hers, but she does recognize when he's being defensive. She just isn't sure what he's trying to defend himself from.
There's a part of her that wants to snipe back with something cruel; the impulse rises up with such force that she can feel the words like a physical presence in the back of her throat. You never figured out about me, did you? How many times did I look you in the face without you ever figuring it out? Why didn't you notice? Why didn't you help me?
...But that's not his fault. She'd been very, very good at what she was doing.
And the thing is, that's not all impossible to read in her expression. Mallory's one of two people who'd be able to pick up that troubled note in her eyes and voice, even though her smile doesn't change. ]
Mmmm, maybe not everything... but I was a housekeeper, you know? We're good at learning by observing.

Ethan...?
[ Well now she just looks vaguely confused, her brows drawing together as she thinks about that. ...oh dear. ]
He's a good boy. I wasn't trying to lead him on, but I'm not gonna not be nice to him, either.
[ For a few seconds she hesitates, then wanders over to perch on the edge of his bed. They're not touching, but it's a much closer point than she could have (maybe should have?) chosen. ]
